A hernia is a defect in a body wall, generally the abdominal wall. This allows organs or other structure to bulge out of the body cavity where it normally lives.

a hernia is "the protrusion of an organ or tissue through an opening in its surrounding walls, esp. in the abdominal region."

It usually requires surgery at some point or another.
