Well, are we talking sexually or socially? I do tend to notice that more heterosexual or lesbian women are willing to accept pre-op or non-op transmen as lovers than heterosexual men or lesbian women are willing to accept pre-op, non-op, or even post-op tranwomen as lovers. I don't know quite why that is, although it might come from more genderqueer acceptance within lesbian communities (stone and TG butches nearly already straddle the line of FtM sexuality) and the desire of a lot of heterosexual women for men with feminine qualities (understanding, good listener, etc., etc.), a more fluid sexuality (it's more acceptable for women to be bisexual than men to, for instance), and not such a huge need for biological penises, or a strap-on, dildo, or fingers being fine substitutions. On the other hand, lots of lesbians won't accept lesbian transwomen because, coming from a [ridiculous] feminist viewpoint that sees men as the hated enemy, they refuse any trace of manhood in their circles, and label them 'womyn-born-womyn only', etc.. And many heterosexual men don't want MtF because they feel it threatens their heterosexuality and must mean they have gay impulses. Although there are gay men who accept both, most, I've seen, are pretty clear set in wanting biological men, so I keep them out of the debate.
In terms of social acceptance, I think that transmen are still a very little-known phenomenon, so people who get educated on it are often more accepting, I think, because they don't come into the knowledge with pre-existing stereotypes and all that. MtF's have a tremendous difficulty because everybody has their own concepts of them, whether it is porn's 'shemales' or 'chicks with *****', or the cinematic phenomenon of transsexual Buffalo Bill or Ed Gein, or confusing drag queens with MtF's . . . there are a lot of preconceptions. FtM's still are largely unknown, so they have the benefit of coming in with a clean slate, tabula rasa. There's also the fact that many transwomen, by no fault of their own, don't pass very well. A lot do, but for some reason, it seems easier for FtM's to shed a feminine appearance than some MtF's can overcome a masculine appearance. And our society has some difficulty in being comfortable with those who remind us of their transsexual status in such a way, whatever that says about our social prejudices.
I think both suffer from lack of acceptance and misconceptions; FtM's are accused of simply not wanting to be lesbians (for those who are attracted to women), of transitioning in order to get 'male privilege', etc., etc.. And MtF's have too many to mention, too. So it's hard to say who 'has it worse'. But I agree that a lot of people are uncomfortable with MtF's and it might seem simpler to be FtM.
Hope that helps!

Interesting question! I think society at large handles FTM's better but only by default. FTM's are generally hard to spot in the day to day. Where as MTF's can pretty easy to distinguish.. the height, the hand size, and voice often betrays them. A MTF is going see much sooner how a person feels about them. Where as life can be harder for FTM's cause though they "pass" easier it makes it that much harder if they have to reveal their situation later on.

I think society handles ftms better because there is still a huge stereotype of effeminate men and drag queens, which of course not all mtfs are. Plus, masculine clothing and short haircuts for women are so commonplace that isometimes it is difficult to tell if someone is a bioguy or an ftm.

Accepted for who they are? None of the "T" community has gained much real acceptance from straight, gay, bisexual, and lesbian groups.
