seriously? thats a huge topic.

in the ninteen hundred the world was ruled by large empires. British, ottoman, austro hungarian, tzarist russia. major political movments were largely to do with class, they were painted in terms of "socialism" vs "capitalism" and were about who should control the means of production and how. Although companies generaly owned the means of production governments had a huge say in how weath could, and was distributed. During the twentieth century there were two world wars, fought by imperial powers, against other imperial powers, which largely dissintegrated that system of worldwide power distribution, and led the victorious countries to support the notion of the nation state. during this time many states were created, in africa and asia, by decolonization, and may others eg ireland, ussr created them selves by revolutions, of which more later. the end of the twentieth century has seen the nation state gradualy become subserviant to the multinational company, and these days true politics is about giant scale economics. The world is comming closer together, if you believe what you are told, but interestingly it is doing so along almost exactly the origional fault lines of imperialist states (ie europe, now including usa thanks to their part in the world wars) vs colonised (ie everyone else). there have been some movements during this century which have gone against this trend however, notably, communism, which has rissen, and then fallen during the period you are disscusing. this alternative to the capitalist system has left huge scars on the world, some of which benifit people, and some which dont. However it has inspired many people around the world to think that there is an alternative to a system dominated by the major economic powers of western europe and the northern united states. as the actual states have declined in importance this has in turn, since the fall of the ussr, the major communist state, translated back into a more grass roots form of world wide resistance to major economic powers, which has been manifest in demonstrations, and protests against governments in many countries, calling on them to behave better towards people, even if this must be done at the detriment of large buisnesses.

some other notable topics not even touched upon here which have totaly changed the face of the world in the last hundred years
- the telephone, then television, and now teh internets.
- the rise of islam, as a focal point for middel eastern and asian politics.
- the change from large standing armies to technologicaly sophisticated weapons which can make a very small number of people a force to be reckoned with.
- the change from gold standard to electronic backed currancy
- development in the far east, since the 50s the rise of japan and china as serious players on the world stage.
- the growth of actual democracy, as witnessed in many thirld world countries ie india, parts of south america.
- hugely widening gap between rich and poor based on many of the factors above.

The political machines of the early 20th century are fairly gone, with the exception being a part still in Chicago. The Boss Tweed's of then have turned into the lobbyist groups of today though.
