A lot depends on your price range. I like to give something practical, and money is always appropriate. If the student is going on to college, a good dictionary, or an expensive pen is nice. In the upper price range, a computer is really cool. I like the idea of a pre-paid MasterCard to bring to campus, or a gift card to someplace they'll shop is always welcome. When in doubt, cash always fits and the color is always right!

Gift cards are good. When I graduated I got a lot of gift cards and it was so fun because if I had gotten money I would have done the responsible thing and saved it, but with a gift card I was forced to spoil myself!
