Bruising is caused by localized trauma. Blood vessels become damaged and blood escapes into interstitial areas (between cells - where its not supposed to be). The damaged blood vessels quickly clot (repair themselves) and the blood that is left causes purple or reddish marks on the skin (a bruise). Hemophiliacs are unable to clot or repair their damaged blood vessels and their bruises can be very large and even life threatening.

A bruise is caused by veins and capillaries breaking under the skin bleeding into the surrounding area(also under the skin). As the body heals the breaks carrying away wastes the bruise(s) change colors.

A bruise occurs when the tissues underlying the skin become injured. The skin is not broken, but the delicate capillaries (small blood vesselS')' below the skin's surface rupture, and blood drains out into the surrounding area. The blood seeps into the layers of the skin, resulting in pain, swelling, and "black-and-blue marks" -discoloration that starts out red, then turns dark and bluish, and finally may become a yellowish color as the blood under the skin is absorbed.
