I think that every action that a person performs is done to satisfy a need or want that they may have. This reason may seem incredibly selfish, but I also believe that not all of our needs or wants are themselves selfish.

I think it's a need to satisfy a deep restlessness inside ourselves. The problem is we seek to fill the void with more money, more toys, bigger homes, just more 'things'. People will start to wake up to the reality of this reality. That this is someone else's dream and we've been trapped inside for too long. Viva la resistance!

I believe it's born out of a deep seated need. Even our "wants" have a basis in some form of genuine need. In my opinion the soul of man has a crisis need for its Creator and so the spirit of man seeks to fulfill that need through the physical body. It searches all kinds of avenues to meet the souls need. Unfortunately we search in all the wrong places.

A lot depends on the culture. Some cultures are more materialistic, thus selfishing comes more into play, while other cultures are more nationalistic, thus the common good comes more into play.

I look at it like we are monkeys with big brains. Sometimes we play with the babies, sometimes we give food to the poor. Who cares why? Really. Soon you'll be dead and we'll all be dead. What does it matter why we did it? Just live.

In general, there are no generalizations. We are all different with different moods, emotions and needs. There is no such thing as a "Standard" person.

Definitely satisfaction is the ultimate motivation. Sometimes it can be fear.

any answer to a question like that must in the end sound trite,

imho its to try to impose some sort of order on their surroundings, to seek for meaning in events.
