Psychology is technically the study of mental processes, behavior, emotions, and the effect that brain chemistry and addiction have on them. Having said that, psychology can help some people understand why they are they way they are, how they got there, and how to get to the place that is safe, healthy and fulfilling.

BTW, if your teacher is collecting this data for statistical analysis you probably shouldn't have asked it on yahoo answers because we can all see what eachother wrote and it might influence or sway our answers towards a certain direction and this would be called a confounding variable... something you do not want. (So basically, don't tell your teacher that you did it this way and also if its for a very serious ongoing study then this data shouldn't be used)

its the study of psyche or the human mind... but since the mind is hard to study because you dont see it or it is immeasureable, they were simply led to studying what is observable, which is the behavior.
