Why does my Jade plant leave an oily residue on the surrounding area?

I have noticed that wherever I set the plant, days later there are little oily droplets all over the tabletop and wall behind it. What the heck is it?

As a child, my third grade teacher had a three foot tall Jade in the classroom. How old must it have been?

It sounds like your plant has scale. It is an insect that emits a sticky substance. Check with a nursery or somewhere they sell lots of indoor plants for the correct treatment.

The size of the plant you mentioned sound pretty old. Jades do not grow quickly.
