If it just happened, ice it. If it happened more than 12 hours ago, then take an Advil or Motrin to reduce inflammation and pain every 6-8 hours for a day, and as needed for a second day and keep it immobilized. Pain is actually your body's signal to keep the injury from movement or contact, so listen to it. Also drink a lot of water to speed up the healing process. If you don't take a daily multivitamin, try taking one everyday because among other benefits it contains zinc which is a known catalyst for tissue repair.
Hope you feel better soon. ;o)

Ice it tonight. Tomorrow put an ace bandage on it and around your hand to keep the thumb somewhat still and prevent it from getting caught on anything. Don't use the thumb for the next couple days if you can help it. Tomorrow evening start soaking it in some warm water a couple times a day. Do some very gentle exercizes with it, starting on Friday, but don't overuse it. Tincture of time. :)
Take some tylenol or Ibuprofen if it's bothering you.

get a popsicle stick and tape it to your thumb, it works like a splint. Since its sprained it should heal pretty quick. Going to the hospital is pointless because there isn't much they can do, in fact they usually do the same thing with a tongue depresser.
