The monsoon season is July and August, occassionally leaking into June and September. You wont have to worry about it in May. I have heard several news reports lately though saying that this summer will be one of the hotest on record, I have lived in Phoenix 25 years and I have seen it hit 126 in June so its hard to imagine hotter than that, but again these are just people trying to make predictions so take it for what its worth, but be prepared to see anything from low 70s to low 100s in May.

Yes. Many people think of arid desert when they think of Arizona and Phoenix. But they do get obvious storms, usually in the winter months, but occasionally at other parts of the year.

You must remember, that even though they are in the desert, Phoenix is only a couple hundred miles away from the Sea of Cortez and Gulf of Mexico. There is a monsoon season over the water in those areas, which can lead to surprisingly heavy rainstorms sometimes. When it rains even lightly in the valley, there is a very real possibility of flash flooding, where small dry creekbeds can become raging torrents of storm water, overrruning the streets and freeway underpasses and flooding lowlying areas. Every year somebody dies or must be helped to escape from their cars, which have tried to cross a deep area of rain, and the motor conked out from the rain.

May should not be a serious problem. It is a sunny month, and sort of between the Spring showers and the deep heat of Arizona in June.

Rainy Season In Arizona

we get what is called monsoon season here in az.

it usually starts in June-July and lasts clear through till april. although our summers are usually blistering hot-we will quite frequently get late afternoon or early evening storms. quite a few of these are considered "microburts" which are quick, powerful storms that sneak up rapidly-cause a TON of damage, knock out power, etc and then disappear within a matter of minutes. most of our damage during the monsoon season is due to these types of storms.

rainfall during the monsoon is exciting b/c it's usually heavy and causes flooding in low-lying areas. Every year we have some yahoo on the news that gets their car stuck in the floodwaters b/c this is az afterall-they can make it through the floodwaters-it's pretty funny. rarely do we hear of a death b/c of it. it is nice in the summer b/c it cools things down-especially at night.

these storms are cool to watch too-lots of wind and lightening-i'm a total stormwatcher and can't wait for the monsoon to come this year.

may is pretty nice here-temps are just slowly starting to rise so expect about 80-85 degrees most days and lots o' sunshine!!
