Well Liberace sued the tabloids when they said he was gay. Carol Burnett sued the tabloids. Most of the time tabloids were not taken that seriously but when they went too far at least by the celebrities standards they did get sued.

Prior to 1975 there just weren't as many celebrities to do the suing in the first place, and society in general was less obsessed with them. Less interest from the public means less interest from the media. Less interest from the media means less chance of some paparazzi moron overstepping the mark for his/her precious "scoop".
