You are in a tough situation. Arrogant bosses are the absolute worst. Have confidence in your work, and don't let him win. He wins when you lose it, and when you subject yourself to his irresponsible dominance. Don't engage him any more than absolutely necessary, stand your ground without getting into it if possible. If it continues, look for another job. Life is too short. Be a good boss when you become one.

You're smart not to lose your cool. Just because your boss is being a jerk don't come down to his or her level. Communicate calmly and keep the emotions in check. Try to get past the way your boss is communicating and listen to the content. What, exactly is he or she asking for? Are there real issues regarding your work? If so make a note of them, improve them and bring to your boss' attention the improvements your have made. If there is no "content" - your boss is just yelling to intimidate you, make a note of when this occurs, what words are used (pay close attention to inappropriate language, etc). If at all possible try to transfer away from this "boorish boss" and you'll have evidence of why you're looking for a move.

The next time he/she yells at you for something you did wrong, wait until they've cooled off or until the end of the day. Then ask for a word in private. Open up with an apology for "screwing up". But follow up by letting them know it makes you nervous when they yell at you which is not helpful. Ask them to point out your error and you will correct it immediately. This is simply professional courtesy as well as good business practice.

If you like your job, I wouldn't do anything directly. Avoiding and not being the center of attention is the best way. To many times people try to hard. If he/she is yelling you and belittling you, you don't have to take that. You have rights. Go above them, or to HR. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, call the local office Job enforcement agency and let them know. They will keep it confidental. Good Luuck.

Someone once gave me this great bit of advice:

"Don't work for a jerk"

A boss who yells at you is a jerk. Look for a transfer to another position or another company.

Be reasonable, but be strong. It's not worth getting yelled at like Mel Cooley. Stand your ground and stand up to him using kindness and patience.

You can quit your job. How are you able to work under those conditions?
