It led to a rise in the use of European tools, weapons and clothing, while causing dependence on beaver trapping/hunting by indians. Many indian tribes used beaver as a new excuse for attacking other tribes, leading to the numerous intertribal "beaver wars".

The demand for beaver pelts also led entire families to take part in hunting, prior to this most hunting was done by men in Algonquin tribes(Midwest to east coast of USA, and Ontario and some of Quebec)

The traders, mainly among the French, frequently intermarried with the indians. Yes liquor was traded with the indians, much to the anger of Jesuit missionaries who hated the negative effect it had on their followers and their families, especially in the receptive Ottowa tribe.

Needless to say the demand for furs and the exuberant response from the indians nearly drove beaver to extinction east of the Mississippi.
