You've gotten a lot of good answers above (besides the Monopoly ones). I'll second everyone who recommended Axis & Allies, it's a great game.
It is somewhat rules heavy, and plays on a large scale (the world), so it can be time consuming. If that's your style, definitely go for it.
For a lower (engagement level) look at combat, I'll add Memoir '44 to the list of recommended titles. The basic game is designed for 2 players, but with the Memoir '44: Overlord rules, you can play with up to 8, although you may need extra game sets to do so. Memoir '44 is a high quality game in terms of components as well as rules.

There are various new "flavors" of Risk out there now. My friends and I like to play Risk 2210 A.D., Risk God-storm is alot of fun, also Star Wars Risk: The Original Trilogy edition just came out is also alot of fun.
I've also played Axis & Allies, especially the Avolon Hill version of the game. They've developed several spinoff including Axis & Allies Europe, Axis & Allies Pacific, Axis & Allies D-Day and Axis & Allies The Battle of the Bulge.
If you've ever played Settlers of Cataan, there are few spin offs of that game as well that you might find interesting.
Good luck!

There is a board game named Axis & Allies. It is a World War II game where four players would take on the parts of America, England, Germany, and Japan (and a fifth player would be Russia). It is similar to RISK where each turn consists of buying war units, moving into battle, adding your new units, and collecting "money." Axis & Allies is tons of fun.

I recommend Settlers Of Catan. It has enough strategy to entertain adults, but is simple enough for a 12-year old (or a heavy drinker) to play. You don't win by beating your opponents into submission. Rather, you must co-operate with the other players in order to be the first one to accomplish a set of goals. This way, its a lot of fun even if you don't come out on top.

Have you tried Risk 2210 AD? It builds on the original, in that you can also fight in the water and on the moon. Also, you can use "energy" (the currency of the future) to buy cards and bring your commanders (who use 8-sided dice) into play. Note that when I say buy cards, I mean cards that actually effect the outcome of the game, not just territory cards. Each kind of commander has its own deck.
If it's the game play of Risk that bores you, you'll probably want to go with Axis & Allies.

Definitely go to Board Game Geek. There is a ranking system, there are forums to discuss and review games, there are trading pages, there are rules variants... it's an online heaven for board game geeks.
