I don't mean the dietary zinc, I'm looking for pieces of metal to melt down. I know you can find it in pennies made after 1982, but those are illegal to melt (destruction of federal currency). So I wonder if there's some other common place to find it.

galvanized stuff. isn't it coated with zinc. nails, screws, roofing
materials. Also, probably some types of batteries.

I can't really answer your question but until just a few weeks ago it was definitely legal to melt our coins. The mint applied a law to stop it, due to the rise in price of copper and zinc. They are afraid a big melt would harm the economy. You can not alter a coin to be something it is not. The ban is on nickels and cents but not the other coins. Try a junk yard.

Did you want to make things out of it? Or are you trying to recycle it and make ingots? Zinc is found in construction (zinc coated steel), batteries, brass, electronics, computer components and appliances. You can also buy zinc sheets.

Try looking under "Metals" in the Yellow Pages. Scrap yards might be a good place to look as well...
