It's a sin to kill a mockingbird. Atticus says it's because it's a beautiful bird that has beautiful melodies. So, it's a sin to kill something beautiful. All people, regardless of color or mental ability, are beautiful and therefore shouldn't be harmed. That is the lesson that Atticus is trying to teach his children.

They are both harmless people, but people fear them because they are different.
Tom because he is black, so he must be opposed, and when the girl claims he molested her, even though most know it was the girl's father, they go ahead and accuse Tom - he never did anything to them.
Boo - has a mental illness. He also is totally harmless, but people fear him, and would surely like to do away with them.
Mockingbird - kill it just because it's there, even though it is perfectly harmless too.
