On July 23, 1923, Villa was killed in Parral Mexico running errands and stopping at the bank (the end of the month was coming up and that's when ranch hands were traditionally paid back then).

Seven gunman armed with repeating rifles ambushed the little convey he was in -- over 150 bullets were fired in about two minutes. Villa was cut down by 16 of those, including several to the head.

In the brief gun battle it's reported that he did tell one of the survivors from his staff "Don't let it end this way, tell them I said something."

It was never determined who ordered the killing of Villa. The assassins that survived all were given light sentences by the Mexican government -- leading to speculation that they played a direct role in his death. It's thought that Villa remained a strain between Mexican-U.S. relations in a post World War One world.

He is now interred in the Tomb of Illustrious Men in Mexico City.

Hope this helps a little. --Andy

In 1920, Villa negotiated peace with new President Adolfo de la Huerta and ended his revolutionary activity. He went into semi-retirement, with a detachment of 50 of los dorados for protection, at the hacienda of El Canutillo . He was assassinated three years later (1923) in Parral, Chihuahua, in his car. The assassins were never arrested, although a Durango politician, Jesus Salas Barraza, publicly claimed credit. While there is some circumstantial evidence that Obregon or Plutarco Elías Calles was behind the killing, Villa made many enemies over his lifetime, who would have had motives to murder him. Today Villa is remembered by many Mexicans as a folk hero

Pancho Villa Died

Panco was a bandit, boy. His horse was fast as polished steel. He wore his gun outside his pants for all the honest world to feel. Pancho met his match, you know, in the desert down in Mexico; nobody heard his dying words. But that's the way it goes.

All the Federalis said, they could have had him any day. They always slip away, out of kindness I suppose.

The boys tell how Pancho fell and left his living, in a cheap hotel. The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold, so the story ends where told.

Lefty he can't sing the blues all night long like he used; the dust that Pancho bit down south, ended up in Lefty's mouth.
