It depends on weather you can run a cable between the
computers.
Either way you should get a Wireless Linksys for $49.95 always on sale at Best Buy, Circuit City and WalMart.
You will need a three foot Category 5 cable which I think comes with the router. If not they are a couple bucks.
You will unplug the cable leading from your modem to your computer from your computer and plug it into your router. You will then plug the new cable into your computer and into the router.
If you can stretch a wire to your second computer you need a category 5 cable long enough to reach from your router to the second computer & you are done.
If you can't wire to your second computer you need a wireless receiver for the second computer & then you won't have to wire.
I know this may be confusing but go a step at a time. Get the router & hook it up then ask for help if you need to go wireless.

I've had a lot of trouble with setting up routers. If you're really lucky, you can plug the router into your cable or DSL modem (into the plug that connects to your computer right now), and then plug the computer into the router (usually the ports into which you can plug computers are numbered, and you should start with 1), turn them all on, and they'll work. Then, if you want to start a wireless network (make sure your computers have wireless cards!), type 192.168.1.1 into your browser's address bar, which will usually send you to a page where you can configure your router. Ha ha. That's if you're lucky. If you're not so lucky, you'll have to call your ISP and ask them what you need to do to make your router compatible with their network, and they probably won't want to do it if you didn't buy the router from them. So then you'll also have to call the comany that made the router and ask them for help. Of course, all of this may not be necessary-- looking at the router's user guide is always helpful!

START WITH THE ONE WITHOUT INTERNET FIRST, THEN IF IT DON'T WORK STRAIGHT AWAY YOU STILL HAVE INTERNET ON YOUR OTHER MACHINE
okay whatever your network you will need the id/password you used to install the modem or router you are using now
switch everything off, unplug the modem you are using, unistall the software for that modem. then follow the instructions to install, the router, the disc should be self installing. oh! one thing
MAKE SURE YOUR NEW ROUTER IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER
its a small thing but important,
It'll ask for a key code, it'll be in the box somewhere
at somepoint you will be for an ID and/or Password, this will be you connection to your service provider, so it will be the same as you used to get your modem working. then everything should work.
That should be it, i recently got a router, that pretty much what i done,

I had the same problem when I got a wireless network for my house. The main computer worked fine and then the laptop wouldn't "connect". It was the most retarded thing, but after a few hours it started working. I had to set it up, the internet connection and wireless connection to the laptop, about five times. Remove the porgram and load it back again. I stood close to the router and eventually it worked. Then after about 6 weeks it stopped working again. I am not sure what causes the connection to act like that, but I found it very frustrating.

the simplest way to do this it to make a computer a server and the other a client...on server you have to 2 have 2 NIC(network interface cards)...one connected to internet and one using crossover cable to the other computer...and after that just enable internet connection sharing on first computer, in properties menu of your "internet connected" NIC...or else, you can set-up nat on your ruoter...it's simple...should have a manual on it that will tell you how to log in and after that you get a wizard
