Medical assistant do both front office work and back office work.
Front office would include answering phones, making appointments, billing insurance companies etc.
Back office would include all your clinical stuff like taking patient vitals, giving injections, assisting with minor surgeries.
Medical assistants do not make nearly as much money as a Registered Nurse.

The role of the medical assistant is normally clerical. Medical assistants are not practitioners or medical personnel; and would not be compensated as such.
You may be confusing the term with that of a physician's assistant, who is, in fact, a medical practitioner. PA's receive education and training far beyond the level of RN's, and do actually practice medicine, usually under the supervision of an MD or medical firm.
