Each person has to answer/decide that for h/himself--if it's important to them. Most people seem to have an organized religious belief system that they accept that helps guide them. I did, but it gave way to having to find Devine Guidance on my own.
For me, as life went on, I realized that a series of problems encountered in my life, caused me to stop whining and complaining and finally accept responsibility for myself and my child. I found that it was my mind and emotions that I had to conquer; look at reality squarely; and do effective problem-solving. It was a learning process. Stopping the fear and feelings of helplessness; developing a positive frame of reference--a faith in a Higher Power; and through this process, developing a positive self-image and helping others the best we can. For me, this is my belief in the purpose of life: to become the best person I can be; care for others as myself; develop the talents and abilities we were given--SEARCH for them and they shall appear!

I'm a Christian therefore my answer is based on the bible. I believe our goal here is to make the world a better place by being Christ like and exhibiting the love, kindness, and faith He did. Our goal should be to live a comfortable life on earth without tons of excess (million dollar homes all over, 10 expensive cars sort of thing), reach lost souls with the gospel of Christ and ultimately to live life eternal in heaven.

nothing really .. our existence is no more noticeable than fleas on a dogs back our lives are the total of a blink of the eye in geologic time and the most we can hope for when mother earth shifts the climate is to be a fossil record.just hope for our sakes that either the eastern religions are correct with reincarnation or the Christian beliefs are real ..

You create your own meaning. People can debate whether there is a 'greater purpose' from now until eternity ends, and I don't know that we'll ever get an answer. The beauty of life is that it is what you make of it.

If you feel that question is really important for you, the first thing you have to do is stop acting and thinking like a classical occidental, who likes inmediate answers to it's questions.
You cannot imagine the long way you have to travel to really even understand the meanless of your own question.
