Real tacos are soft shell. I think hard shell was probably invented by Taco Bell because it is easier to do. You can have all of the shells premade rather than having to heat individual tacos.
Also soft shell are better for you. No oil.

I like both but hard taco shells are probably my favorite. But I like burritos better.

Soft tacos are more pleasant to eat. Less mess but pleasant nonetheless.
