~~~Such a sad story about the Mother of 3 who was trying to win the Wii,,,and she entered a contest to win. Who ever drank the most water in one sitting would win. I dont know how much they had to drink. But she died by water intoxication. Do you know how much you would have to drink to make that happen?
You don't actually "drown" when you drink too much water; water intoxication is what happens when your electrolytes get out of balance (i.e., too diluted) which causes a variety of problems in the cells of your body. Drowning happens when your lungs fill with water and you can't breathe.
The fatal amount varies depending on the person's size, other medical conditions, etc., but may be as little as 1/2 gallon.
And yes, it certainly is a sad story.
I thought that was really sad too.
Water intoxication happens when you drink an excessive amount of water over a period of time. The water dilutes your blood and can cause your sodium levels to drop.
It doesn't take much. If you drink quickly, it can be less than a gallon of water.
