I don't think of them as "reality" - they're really more like game shows.

It's what you could call 'edited' reality. The footage is real, the participants aren't reading a script or being directed, they are behaving normally. However, the footage is then edited in a way to form a narrative, or storyline. So it can be put into a different order to create drama, to make certain characters appealing or annoying to the audience, and to make it interesting to watch. Quite often when reality show participants see the footage, they are surprised at the way they are portrayed.

Surviver, the biggest loser, american idol, so you think you can dance. Imagine how many people live on the street homeless with no food. Thats reality but hey at least people on them shows are doing it for money (Surviver). Alot of people think they can sing and dance. Look at william hunn. Reality is they cant. 80% of people in the world today is overweight with poor eating habits. Can these shows get any more real? Its the jerry springer and the maury povich i tested 10 men you are still not the father. Its the talk shows that are rigged and fake.

No, the're not reality, the producer have shows edited to make people appear a certain way, and then theres the fact that people act differently in front of a camera.
