I have had good experience with Toshiba. It has a comparatively low price and tends to have the popular features.

If you are just doing basic things it is harder to get outdated. When a new laptop comes out it will run faster and will have drivers for some newer peripheral devices but everything you have now will still work. If you want to be the person on the cutting edge and the one with the fastest and biggest computer you will always lose in terms of being outdated. If you just stick to regular activities as you listed almost any one will be OK.

Features to look out for are how much does it weigh (if you are going to carry it around a lot), how big is the screen (so you don't strain your eyes squinting), and as much memory and hard drive as you can afford (compared to the competitors).

For a college student, may I suggest a mainstream system. Since you don't need a super techy one try to get one with a Windows Operating system (if you are familiar with) if Vista is available at the same price get it, Intel processor (Core Duo). I am assuming you are working on a budget and needs something to last all thru your college years. I would like to suggest you look at least two brands, Dell & HP are the first. Dell has a very good reputation and backed by second to none support service. HP has more models to choose from. For a few bucks, try to get one with extended warranty. If possible three (3) years. Don't get unknown brands or whiteboxes (clones). Don't try to get a unit with a lot of bells & whistle this will just add to your cost. Also ask your friends what are their experience. Good luck on your studies and hope I help a little!

I agree with dlant6, get a Mac. The rest are made in China now, no matter what the brand, even Sony. If you need a laptop that runs Windoze look at the Asus or Acer America. Check them out at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Brand=1146&N=2030260032+50001146&Submit=ENE&Manufactory=1146&SubCategory=32
I've had one of each brand and, for the price, either will beat the pants off the HP-Compact, Dell, Gateway or Toshiba. The Sony's are pretty good for Chinese junk (yes, they are all made in China now) but they are also pricey.
Good luck, buy a Mac
