How to build a successful website?
There are many ways to get a website built. The following steps are a good start in building a successful website, however:
1. Do keyword research
Ideally, the site should be about something you're interested in, or passionate about. (Then building and maintaining your site won't feel like work, it will feel like fun.)
Choosing keywords determines what your site will be about, and what pages your site will be about. For example, this site http://www.textmefree.com is about 'free sms' and has pages that are related to text messages like an sms jokes page.
Wordtracker is a good site to use for keyword research - http://www.wordtracker.com
2. Register your domain name
Register a domain name based on the keyword research above. There are lots of places to do this like NameBoy.com or Godaddy.com or Freeparking.co.uk
3. Build useful content
Useful content? This could mean informative articles, tips, or product reviews that inform and educate the people who visit your site.
Tip, download a free copy of Make Your Content PREsell!

4. Email marketing is important
Try and capture your visitor's e-mail address
It's important to stay in touch with your site visitors (when they arrive) as they may never return to your site, if you don't.
5. Test, test, test
Test all of your pages to make sure there are no typing mistakes and all of your links and images work properly. You can also see how your website will look in different browsers too.
A good testing tool is Netmechanic once the site is hosted
- http://www.netmechanic.com
6. Host your website
Lots of places to host your website. Cheapest is not necessarily the best.
7. Promote your site
You have to promote your site, continually. If you don't know much about website promotion then I can recommend that you take this email course called Promote Your Site Every Week at http://www.free-website-promotion-course.net
(Actually search engine optimization begins with building your website, as explained here -http://www.howipromotemywebsite.com/search-engine-optimization.html . This covers using title tags, header tags and meta description tags, and putting keywords into the copy of the page)
8. Monitor your site stats
When people visit your site you should learn which pages they go to, and which ones they don't. Find out what they are looking for etc. and then provide it for them.
You must know how many visitors your website gets, where they come from, and what pages they view.
9. Automate, automate, automate!
It will always be easier if you automate as much of the site-building process as you can. You can do this by:
- using templates (Dreamweaver lets you do this)
- using Server Side Includes (do a search to find out more)
- using CSS style sheets to help with the look and layout of your site
It's not difficult to build a website but it is difficult to build a successful website. The steps above can help you do that.
If I were you, however, I'd actually use a product called Site Build It! as it guides you through all of the above steps (and more) all with the aim of helping you build a website that people visit and that you can make money from.
Good luck with it, whatever you decide to do

I definitely cannot tell you everything that may be helpful to you, but have some limited experience.
First, in order to have a website, you have to have a place to host it. There are lots of webhosting services out there, and most are quite cheap and easy to find on the web or in the phone book. $10 - 15 per month will buy adaquate service for a simple advertising site, and the provider can normally assist you in purchasing a domain.
Most providers will also offer website construction. You can look into their services, or try doing it for yourself. There are lots of software tools designed to allow someone with little or no experience to design a reasonably professional site. Even Microsoft Word will allow you to save documents as html files. Type it up, insert some illustrations; if you like what you see, save it in html format, and you have your website! You just have to upload it to your webhost's server per his instructions.

Here is a good guide to look at before you get started: http://www.richkahmer.com/build-a-website.html
Between hosting and domain registration, you're looking at about $60/year.
