Why do the people not tip? Even if the service is great?

And what should be a fair tip... keeping in mind that servers literally live off their tips... the restaurant pays them pocket change?

I'm a server, going on 4 years now. I do this because it's better than staying at home and letting only my husband out of the house! I try my very best to do good.. try to give people what they need before they know that they need it.. like refills, napkins, boxes, etc. if they're regulars have their order turned in the moment i see them at the door... but still, some people don't? even if everything is perfect!

I always tip well. However, i have run into people who feel they should not have to tip and employers should pay a better wage, but what they do not realize is if that was the case, they would be paying more for the services anyway. Comapnies are not going to take a profit cut just like that.

Same deal as 40 years ago (I am 53)... 15%-20%

I have had some servers who were less than good but even the worst of them I would simply round the 15% to the dollar below so even then they'd be getting 13%-15%.

Only a real prick does not tip... shame on them.

Some people are cheap, some people are broke, some people come from countries where tip servers isn't common. Usually the first one.

I pay 10% of the bill. More if I know them well and if they gave exceptional service.

Some people don't tip because they really can't afford even a little bit extra.

Then there are those people who are just down right cheap!

The reason that i didnt tip is because i felt like ..this is the occupation that they filled out the application for...and the fact that some restaraunts feel the need to tack on their own gratuity taxes...if they wanted to make more money..get a better job.

Sometimes after the overpriced meal, you can't afford a tip. I don't know when servers forgot that a tip is optional.

Plain and simple....because they are rude!!! 15% is the accepted norm, I however always tip 20% or above.
