Every time I put new cotton clothes in the wash they come out with what appears to be orangey spots on them. This also sometimes happens with older clothes. Usually they are darker colored like dark gray or brown. The spots look like bleach spots and can range from large fading areas to small concentrated spots. I do not use bleach at all. What's the deal???

I do not have a well, the house was built in '84, I separate colors, I've tried cold water. It's very odd. Wouldn't rust stains usually come out on lighter colored clothes? I've tried 2 different washing machines. I've also tried different detergents.

You could have a number of reasons for this including rust in your washer or dryer, iron in your water, using hot water and it sets in stains, does your water have chlorine in it?

If you are separating your laundry, it can't be that the colors are running. Are you using the correct temperature for the fabrics?

Could be there's something caught under the agitator.

I've had something similar. Some of my ivory towels come out of the washer with tiny rust spots. I have no clue what's the cause of that, but here's what I suspect: I am a teacher, and I always have a handful of paperclips in my pocket. I try to remember to empty the pockets, but I do find the paper clips in the washer from time to time. I'm thinking some may get caught under the agitator and throw out a little rust??? It's a real mystery, as is yours.

I suggest you do a little detective work and look for clues. Good luck.

The orangey spots could be rust leaking through cracks or breaks in the enamel inside your washer or dryer. Spots that look like bleach spots...does someone else use the washer/dryer - there may be residual bleach that you don't know about. Vinegar and urine can also cause this type of spotting, could the clothes be coming into contact with those?

Do you use detergent? Orange spots sound like rust. Do you use well water? Or, is your water tank real old? You may be getting rust in the water from those sources, the water or your wash machine.

That is strange.

You might have a problem with your water, or with your pipes.

Good luck!
