An interesting question. Ascension is supposed to be the final step in our spiritual evolution within this physical body. Once a soul has ascended it is able to manifest on the physical plane however is no longer required to. There are a number of persons mentions in Mythology and religious texts as being ascended masters, Buddha being one of the proven factual persons while Myrddyn and Taliesin are both considered to be legendary and their existence is still debated. Ascended Masters generally advise and guide those of us on earth and will occasionally take an active role in mentoring someone who is to be instrumental in great changes and spiritual awakening.
Know that Ascended Masters are not concerned with right or wrong, good or evil, as all forces act towards the greater universal will. They are primarily concerned with the Will of the Universe and the laws of cause and effect. There are a number of websites that treat this topic, I would suggest checking google and www.wikipedia.org

go back in order of genealogical succession; "Inheritance may not ascend linearly"
become king or queen; "She ascended to the throne after the King's death"
go along towards (a river's) source; "The boat ascended the Delaware"
slope upwards; "The path ascended to the top of the hill"
rise: come up, of celestial bodies; "The sun also rises"; "The sun uprising sees the dusk night fled..."; "Jupiter ascends"
