Heaven & Hell are just choices we make here on Earth and are not some distant events waiting to happen. We all have a variety of ways of expessing this but religion does it in a way that leads people to believe that the only life worth living comes to you when you die.
Heaven & Hell are your choices and the result of those choices so make right thoughts, right actions & right intentions here on Earth and live life to the fullest.
More Peace

well, I used to believe that bad souls go to hell right away after people die, but now I'm not so sure (plus, it also depends if the person is religious or not, partially). I think that the dead remain in a sort of dormant state on earth, like in their graves, until the Judgement of Mankind arrives, when all the souls of the dead are awakened to be judged, and are THEN sent to either Hell or the New Jerusalem (the TRUE heaven on earth). Personally, I doubt there is such a thing as hell (though I do believe that the Abyss exists, a prison for fallen angels and not bad people). But I would say that hell would be something along the lines of a place of perpetual torment and terror, anguish and despair, agony and sorrow, where all the negative emotions and feelings of the human mind are personified and magnified exponentially and are locked in that state for eternity. I believe that there might be several layers of hell, though as to what may exist on those layers I would not know. I also do not believe that humans can reach the actual heaven. According to the Book of Revelation, God builds a vast and wonderful city known as the New Jerusalem, after the old, sinful world was cleansed and destroyed, wiped clean. This city is for those who were judged to be good in the eyes of God (or however it is phrased in the book). I do not believe that most humans deserve to go to heaven, just as I believe that we do not deserve to speak to/see God or any of God's angelic messengers.

I'm not sure what my impression of hell is. I am however inclined to agree with Dante Alighieri's interpretation in his first book "Inferno" of a series of three books "The Divine Comedy" (the other two books were "Purgatorio" & "Paradiso"; obviously Purgatory & Paradise)
In it he described hell as being a series of rings (9 circles, each split further into 10 or so) within eachother. The outer ring being reserved for people who weren't bad per-say but were unbaptised (he descibes it as Limbo). They just sat outside Hell. Not punished, not really doing anything...
The further to the centre, where the devil sat, you were in Hell, the more evil you were (& the punishments in each circle became worse & worse the further you go in)

I implore everybody to at least read the first book Inferno. If you like it go to the other books.

Also, I'm for the greek idea that Hell is infact cold, not hot.

What do you mean by "hell"? What are conditions like there? Personally, I have never been to hell but I don't think it is a nice place. Some people think bad people will burn eternally in hell or that souls will experience eternal separation there. On the other hand, I have heard some people say hell is the grave. Either way that one cuts it, I would do my best to avoid living there.

A doctor who had attended many heart attack victims said that some who had been clinically dead and then revived, had had an experience of Hell which was so terrible that their memory would blot it out after a few minutes. Some, previously not religious, even asked the doctor to say a prayer with them and get them out of that place of torment.

A young New Zealander, Ian MacCormack, was clinically dead for 15 minutes after a deadly jellyfish sting, and during this time found himself without a physical body but with all his senses intact. He could hear mocking voices taunting him, plus a sense of being without hope for ever....but as soon as he remembered that he had prayed the Lord's Prayer shortly before he died, he was instantly transported up to Heaven, which was indescribably wonderful (but that is another question!!)

In The Brothers Karamazov, the Devil himself (as hallucinated by Ivan) tells the story of a man who was sentenced to walk for a "quadrillion" miles in the dark before being allowed through the gates of heaven. Just thinking about it, he collapses where he is, and doesn't even move for a thousand years. Then he gets up and starts walking....
Finally he gets into heaven - and two seconds after walking through the gates he knows that it would even have been worth it if he'd had to walk "a quadrillion quadrillion miles, or even a quadrillion miles raised to the power of a quadrillion".
These kind of mind-boggling numbers begin to approach the sense of hysterical hopelessness required to get a sense of hell.

Hell, to me, is full of zealots, bigots, xenophobes, racists and the PC police.
They are all running around telling everyone else how theirs is the only true and righteous way and that everyone must listen to them. In hell none of the above are capable of sustaining a reasoned argument - "JUST BELIEVE" is the argument they all resort to in the end.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
The difference between Hell and Earth is that here i can tell them to kiss my fat, hairy rear end when they start to get on my nerves. In Hell - THERE IS NO ESCAPE!
But Seriously - I'm with Knobby Knobville!
Good question - by the way

I have a few theories.
1. Earth inhabited by evil and destruction death and corruption. No good what so ever apparent around. A dark and sad earth with no love no humor no kindness just a over hanging dank film of depression, despair, and loss.
2. Your greatest fear or worst thing possible that could happen to you relived over and over again each time going through it you still end up being trapped inside your own fear. With no way of overcoming it or escaping.
3. Or the traditional fire, brimstone, and torture for eternity.

This planet is hell. People dying of starvation whilst others throw food in the bin. 1% of the population have the wealth of whole countries. Wars, famine, greed, ignorance.

If you are looking for a religious angle, I think hell would be personal to yourself. Your deepest darkest fears played out for eternity to torment you.
