On the show NEXT a girl was on the show and wore pearls and the other contestants laughed and asked did she get them from a guy, the girl who wore the pearls was like I don't get the joke...I didn't either. The contestants wispered what was so funny in the girl with pearls ears and its been eating me up not knowing why it was so funny, can anyone tell me?

I didn't see this but I think they may have been making a crude sexual joke. Look up 'pearl necklace' on urbandictionary.com for the slang meaning because I dont want to post anything like that where underagers will see it.

The girl with the pearl earring, was a movie with Colin Firth, and Sharlet Johansen. In the movie, an Artist falls for a maid. He paints a picture of her with a pearl earring. This pearl earring was his wife's earring.
He later had to chose between his snotty wife, or the maid. He chose his wife. The maid was later kicked out of the home.
The painting became very famous, and this movie was based on a true to life story. Maybe today people feel that only men who are having affairs, give these girlfriends pearls. So they may think that she is someones Mistress. I have heard of this before, and I think it is based on the past history. That men gave their mistress's a pearl necklace.

Not sure why they would make a joke about pearls...but here's a history of the pearl's significance. Also, pearls are NOT only for old people, as a previous poster stated. They are very popular with brides and sororities members and other formal occasions.
