In most major cities you can dial "211" from any land line; this is the universal help line for health and human services. They will refer you to agencies that work with the homeless in you area.

In my area we just completed a event called Project Homeless Connect. We brought in medical people, housing, mental health, social security, legal, religious, free phone calls, and food for a one stop shop to help the homeless get back on their feet. All of this is in one location so a homeless person can get most of their needs met in one place. We helped several hundred people in that day. We will hold the event again later this year.

I dont know what societies are in your area but a local charity is a good place to start as most are helping the homeless . St. Vincent de Paul or Salvation Army are two good charities who help the homeless or less fortunate. There are also soup kitchens in some countries that feed the homeless and some have shelters for a bed overnite. If you try these you will get some information that will help.

Here is one person's comments on my question about the hoemless and the link: Mental illness and/or addiction have been found to have been among the causes although laziness could very well be another one.

As for how many are veterans, my source (link below) put it at a third or 33%, not all as you assumed, not even half:
THERE IS MORE INFO FROM MY QUESTION, EMAIL ME IF YOU NEED MORE INFO.

"About one-third of the adult homeless population have served their country in the Armed Services. On any given day, as many as 200,000 veterans (male and female) are living on the streets or in shelters, and perhaps twice as many experience homelessness at some point during the course of a year. Many other veterans are considered near homeless or at risk because of their poverty, lack of support from family and friends, and dismal living conditions in cheap hotels or in overcrowded or substandard housing.

Right now, the number of homeless male and female Vietnam era veterans is greater than the number of service persons who died during that war -- and a small number of Desert Storm veterans are also appearing in the homeless population. Although many homeless veterans served in combat in Vietnam and suffer from PTSD, at this time, epidemiologic studies do not suggest that there is a causal connection between military service, service in Vietnam, or exposure to combat and homelessness among veterans. Family background, access to support from family and friends, and various personal characteristics (rather than military service) seem to be the stronger indicators of risk of homelessness."

Go into the downtown area of any big city and they're everywhere.

Last year we took blankets down and gave them out....we haven't done anything yet this year.
