There is a simple comprise to solve this problem: We need to define specifically when life starts.
It is reasonable to say that the right for an individual to live supersedes any other inalienable right. Life is the most fundamental right. Defining when life begins is crucial for determining the morality and legality of abortion. This definition can be made by considering science, philosophy and religion. As is common in our country, we come to solutions through debate and ultimately compromise. This is where the abortion issue should be decided, not by some obscure court decision.
I personally believe the definition of this is easy. As long as the fetus can live and develop outside of the womb, he/she is an individual. If the mother does not want the child, she can pay to have it transplanted to a surrogate environment for development and ultimately artificial birth. If she removes it after this point in its development and does not provide it a chance to live, then she should be prosecuted for negligence or whatever criminal charge applies. The due process of our legal system can work out the details.
Science and technology will ultimately advance to the point where the fetus can develop outside of the womb from an early age. Science will provide these individuals the chance they deserve to live. Politically, we need to recognize that we are infringing on their rights and make a decision on when life starts. As of now, we are just ignoring the issue and this ignorance is damaging our country.

I am pro-choice(I so hate it when they say pro-abortion-nobody is)
If we want less abortions, darned if I can figure out why we make birth control less accessible! I believe we need to be careful, many laws restricting abortion have language stating a fetus is a human being in the same way the woman is. Most would agree that a week old fetus or fertilized egg is not the same as a grown person. For instance, if your wife or daughter or sister was one week pregnant, and the dr. said she would die(for argument, let's say 100%) if she carried the baby to term, do you want the week old fetus to have the same rights?
Also, if we don't want abortions, where is the help for a young woman who chooses to keep the baby? There is simply no support for those women. The US has pretty sad "family values" when it comes to maternity leave, work flexibilty, etc..any support of working mothers. And I have to say, not many pregnant women can give up their babies after 9 months. I know men can't possibly understand that.

She does have the right to make her own decisons, but honestly a pregnant woman's body isn't entirely her body, there is another body living in her body. It has different dna, a seperate heartbeat, different brainwaves, a different sleep schedule and a completely different personality. I have a hard time when i hear, "its a womans right to choose what she wants to do with her body", when it isn't her body at all. Any mom will tell you that from the beginning, they knew it was another being. They can't control when it moves or kicks or sleeps.
People also don't let women know that they are several times more likely to use drugs, become chronically depressed, or commit suicide if they have an abortion. It isn't hard to see all of the negative effects it has on their body and mind. Try looking up, "abortion side effects". here's a little tidbit.
A survey was conducted of 1900 women who had had abortions. The survey asked "Were there any negative psychological effects... [caused] by your abortion?" 94% answered "Yes." 2% answered "No."
Another study was conducted by Dr. Anne Speckhard at the University of Minnesota. She concluded, "After 5-10 years 54% of mothers choosing abortion had nightmares, 81% had preoccupation with their aborted child, 35% had perceived visitations with their child, and 96% felt they had taken a human life."
39000 women who have had an abortion are members of NARAL. 245000 women who have had abortions are members of National Right to Life.

If a woman wants to "choose" what she wants to do with her body, she should fully understand that sexual intercouse can and WILL get you pregnant! Women need to take responsibility and "choose" not have sex (or take birth control at the very least-c'mon!!!). Period. Men can make some effort to avoid it too!!
I think abortion is okay in a case of rape or incest, but absolutely NO other circumstances. It's just not right using this method as a contraceptive. Having a baby is NOT as bad as some people think... It's the best experience!!
Hey one more thing, I just got your email, I did not invite you to an open debate through my email, this is Yahoo Answers, where YOU ASK--we ANSWER... You said PLEASE give me an Answer and you are still not satisfied with this?...(just because it doesn't conform with your opinion)... I am not in having a DEBATE through my email... If I were, I will go to an open FORUM on the internet where I can keep these annoying unwanted messages like yours out of my private my email!!!!

I have to say that I disagree with you, but I do have a very good reason, and I have to say it will also be conceived as a bias. I was adopted, and my birth mother, as much as I hate her, was given an ultimatum by her husband that she either had to abort me or give me up for adoption. She choose to give me up for adoption. I am now 22 years old, and each day I wake up I am thankful for the the decision to adopt. I believe that if a child can not be handled by the biological parent should in fact be given up for adoption. There are so many couples across the United States that are unable to have their own children (such as my parents) and would desperately love to have a child, many of them do not care about defects, health problems or anything else. I understand that if there is a threat to the mothers health needing an alternative, but as for just having a choice, I am against it, I would never judge someone because of their choice, but I do believe that there are much better options out there!

Killing an unborn child is a terrible thing; however, in certain cases where a mother's life is in peril it should be legal. This isn't an easy one because I too believe that a woman's body is her own to do with as she pleases including suicide if that is what she wants. Government control of a woman's body is wrong, but think about the thousands of unborn babies that have been sacrificed. To tell you the truth, I don't know the answer to this problem.

Yes it is, but I wish women would gain a brain and not use abortion as birth control. This is not counting rapes, incest and those kinds of things, but just the general careless sex that ends up in pregnancy and then they have an abortion. Think, women, think!!!! (I'm a woman and I'm AMAZED at how careless my friends are.) I guess I am pro choice, but pro life as well. You know? I would keep the baby if I was to get pregnant but I would like to have the choice, you know?

I am pro-life all the way (even anti death penalty). For me its about principle and personal responsibility as it is the life that would have been. For me I could never even consider having an abortion and I don't see how anyone else could either.
But I will say that I dont go out and protest or tell people they are going to hell or any of that crazy stuff, I just have my opinion.

Those who choose to have an abortion should have thought about whether or not they were ready to have a baby before the chose to have sex. People who choose to have abortions do not want to be held accountable for their actions and it is so sad to see how many babies are murdered every day simply because the female is not willing to take care of her responsibilities. I do agree that it is largely the woman's choice because it is her body, so she need to make sure that she either chooses to use protection (which is still not 100%) or chooses to remain abstinent. There are so many options out there for women in this predicament and abortion should not be one of them.
Side note. One of my close friends had an abortion when we were in high school. I was at my dad's house for the summer and wasn't there to help her before she made such a rash decision. To this day she knows how old her baby would have been and he will never stop feeling guilty for killing her first baby.

To me it is the point of conception and at what stage the baby is. If it can be stopped before it is formed, then I don't see what is wrong with that. I don't worry about the 'god intented' stuff, because even if there were a god, he may not have intented for someone to get pregnant, especially if they were raped or it was just a one-night-stand.
But if the baby is forming already, I don't see how anyone could cut the kid from life. To me that would be like murder.
