I do not understand while the majority of black youth find the urban/hiphop cultue cool. I feel that that it reprisents the everything gone wrong or bad in black america. And its not a racist thing i guess whites have the same thing on a certain level like jeff foxworthy and larry the cableguy(both are complete tools) But the majoraty of white people dont like them. But this so called hip hop culture(thug) is disgusting to me as i would think it would be to anyone with any sense of community.

This is one of the things that continue to divide soo many people in this country.Making mountains out of molehills, pretending that they are looking at differences with an open mind all the while staying away from just going to someone and asking for clarity. Many years ago, America had a fascination with "Gangster", movies, and pretty much still do.But because the genre' has crossed over into a different group, who, if they were to pick up a acoustic guitar, would starve trying to sell records. But since many of these kids have witnessed so many senseless acts of violence, directly and indirectly, this venue offers so many listeners to hear it firsthand.Do I myself care for it,no,but I understand it's place amongst the younger people. The culture in America is n has always been divided, and the word "sub culture", puts everything in context.

People said that about rock and roll - rock and roll transcended being trendy and is now accepted as a part of culture.

People said that about 80's music - 80's music did not transcend being trendy and is now lost in time (even though there is some cool stuff in there)

People said that about grunge - sort of made the transition, but not without being transformed.

People are now saying that about hip hop - its trendy now, but only time will tell if it stick or if it gets lost in time or if it gets transformed.

Music is darwinistic - survival of the fittest. In the case of music survival depends on artists and their fan base. I personally don't like hip hop, but my neighbors who play it don't like rock and roll. We just keep it down mostly and accept it from each other on the occasions when it is loud - seems fair to me.

I don't think its a black/white thing though. Perhaps generally it is, but that's just a surface appearance - look deeper.

Cowboy Troy - I'm no country fan, but his music is cool.
Eminem - I'm no hip hop/rap fan, but he's got some good stuff to.
Pink Floyd - awesome music - race/culture not important.
Living Color - awesome music - race/culture not important.

I think you have to take each song as its own thing rather than attach a label to the entire style or to an entire culture.

Besides, I'd rather deal with things I don't like rather than have baned the things I do like - you just can't have it both ways.

all music is a form of expression and a lot of it is about personal experiences. so urban/hip hop music is just another form of expressing life experiences which a lot of people can connect with. some of it has a positive message, some not but it gets the message across. maybe you don't feel a connection to it because you have never experienced those things.
