I don't understand how a president can be replaced by his brother.
I guess this is from last season's show. Forgive my ignorance -- I just started watching 24.

President David Palmer was shot and killed in the beginning of Season 5. President Logan stepped down at the end of Season 5, and Wayne became the next president.

David Palmer was assasinated by a bullet to the throat from a long range rifle. His brother did not replace him although he played a minor role throughout the season. In the show, Wayne was still David Palmer's Chief aid or chief of staff and speech writer etc.
The president for the season you refer to, last season, was President Charles Logan.
If you can, you should go back and watch all the episodes from the beginning by renting the DVDs.

I quite watching that show a few years ago so I don't if President Palmer is dead or not.
There are only 4 ways that his brother come assume his office.
1: President Palmer is dead and his brother was next in line to succeed him
2: President Palmer is alive and invoked The 25th adornment of the U.S. costuming, and again his bother would have to be the next in line of succession
3: his brother won the office in an election
4 President Palmer was deposed by a coup and replaced by his brother

David Palmer got shot. (last season.) Then the president last year turned out to be evil. So I guess the vice president became president, and a few months later, Wayne became president. It's really weird though-he's not nearly as good of a president as David. Anyways...

In the opening moments of Day 5, Palmer was discussing his memoir with his brother Wayne, when a sniper from the adjacent building shot him in the throat. It was later revealed that the assassin responsible had received his orders from Christopher Henderson, who, in secretly working for President Charles Logan, also ordered the deaths of Michelle Dessler, Tony Almeida and Chloe O'Brian, although the planned assassinations of Chloe and Tony were unsuccessful (Tony was killed later in the day by Henderson himself).

President Palmer was shot in episode 1 last season.
In this season's first episode they said that 2 years had past since then, so there must have been an election since then.

He cant. Not in real life at least. Its a TV show. In real life if the President dies, quits, is thrown out of office or whatever the Vice President takes his place. If by the chance something would happen to both at the same time then the speaker of the house is next in line.
Ive never watched the show, its too far fetched.
