the rope is the most important part of the game as it marks the boundaries and sixes. If the ball goes over the rope without bouncing in front it is a six and if it crosses after boncing it is called a four
So if the rope was not there no one could have found out which one is a four and which one is a six.

In the 19th century boundaries were not marked and all runs had to be run. When dedicated cricket ovals came into being with permanent seating, the boundary was the fence and this continued for a long time. In recent years the TV and news photographers want space inside the fence to film the action so the boundary has been brought in with the rope. It also makes it easier to hit a four or a six as the ball doesn't have to go as far.

The rope is used to mark the boundary line. The boundary line goes all around the edge of the field. If a ball is hit over the line (or rope) on the full, then it is counted as six runs. If it is hit along the ground past the line, it it a four.
The rope isn't necessary, although it helps discern whether the ball went past the boundary or not. When I play in my cricket league, we use cones to mark the boundary and there is sometimes confusion whether the ball passed or not. Sometimes boundary wedges (picture in link at sources) are used.

the rope has become a joke,in the past there was no rope and a 4 was a ball that hit the fence and a 6 was over the fence,
but the modern game has the ROPE for players safety which is fine,we dont want to see players injured but have the rope a meter or two at most not 15 meters in from the fence like in a game at the Adelaide oval the other night.
all the rope is doing when used like this is helping the batsmen i.e score more runs more easily-a miss hit can go for six make them earn their runs,so i say use the rope but use wisely

The rope is used to mark the boundary of the ground. It's always necessary cuz sometimes the fielders do step out of the ground.

yea its required. it marks the boundary line. if the ball bounces to get to the line then its 4 runs. if the ball goes directly over the line its 6 runs. if that never existed then Shahid Afridi would have never made the fastest century.
