I made my wedding invitations in Illustrator and they turned out great. If the learning curve for that is too great (Illustrator is a very sophisticated program designed specifically for graphic design professionals), you could easily just do it in Word or Publisher. If you have skill as a designer, then you can create a beautiful product with almost any tool. Except Paint... please don't use Paint.

I definitely recommend shopping around for fonts. The typeface you select sets the tone for the entire piece, and using real fonts vs. the seven free ones that come with your computer is the first and biggest separation between invitations that look fantastic and ones that are distractingly amateurish. I used Engravure and Park Avenue for mine... they are pretty affordable if you buy single faces at http://www.fonts.com/ - usually in the $20-$40 range. (The whole font family will run you $250-$700, of course).

I do recommend taking the finished file to your local Fedex/Kinkos... I got 200 invites printed on heavy stock - and folded - in about 30 minutes for $30.

Well, you might want to consider using something that's a little more fancy, like Printmaster. Although, it does cost some money to purchase it, it's pretty easy to use and does pretty decent invitations.

I don't know about Adobe Illustrator though, you will have to learn quite a bit before you can make Wedding invitations with that program. That program is quite complex.

Paint or Word can also do it, but I don't think that it will come out with the professional look that you might want.

Your best bet is to use Adobe Illustrator. However, it is an advanced illustration tool so the learning curve may be too steep to get your invitations done in time. I used Adobe Illustrator to design my invitations: www.adobe.com/illustrator. You can download a free trial version that expires after 30 days.

Me too! We aren't getting married for another year but I've started making some. You can try Microsoft Publisher, or Create-a-Card, or Creative Software.

I do not see why you can't use word.
