My daughter's Dr said it was not necessary and could be harmful. They are getting plenty of fluids with breast milk and/or formula.

It can cause water intoxication and diarhea. Both of which can be serious.
I thought it was great to let my baby play with a bottle of water in his highchair while I did the dishes. Usually he would spit it out everywhere and not really drink it. One day I turned around and he was drinking it. I didn't think anything of it until that night when he had bloody diarhea. Very scary. Too much water is a bad thing.

A small amount (2 oz or so a day total) is fine. I've done this a few times when my girls have been congested or just after a bottle if they sound like they still have milk in their throat. Too much could presumably throw off their electrolyte/nutrition balance. A lot of water can cause problems. When you start other liquids (after 6 months generally) I feel it's an excellent idea to go to plain water rather than juice. (so does my pediatrician)

Not wrong, but they just don't need it. On hot days breastmilk changes in consistency to contain more water and be more refreshing. You can do the same by watering down formula a little more, but there's no need for water as a separate feed.

Both breast milk and formula conain all the water a baby requires for the day, so extra water is not needed.

My son has been drinking water since he was 2 months, per instruction of his dr who has been in practice over 20 yrs. There is no reason your child cant drink the water. Believe it or not babies do get thirsty and arent always hungry. The lady above me states it can cause water intoxication that is only if it is an extreme amout of water

Please talk to your doctor about this people on here really don't know. Water is really not good for babies there is plenty in the formula and/or breast milk. If your child is thirsty then feed he/she formula or breast milk. It can cause serious problems for your child and possibly death if given too much.
