Any paper road atlas will provide mileage figures between major metro areas across the USA. Pick the route you want and add up the numbers. If you don't stop driving except for the occasional pit stop, assume an average speed of 60 mph to calculate your driving times. You can buy a road atlas or maybe look one up at the local library.

The problem with using some online resource like mapquest or maps.google is that you usually only get to name the start and end points, and it determines what it thinks is the optimum route between the two.

You can buy mapping software like Delorme Street Atlas USA for as little as $40 that will let you set custom routing directions in between. This will let you say that you want to drive from LA to NYC, but that because it's winter you want to go via the Dallas area (or whatever). The nice thing with this is that you can get it loaded on a laptop, iPod, Palm, PocketPC or some GPS devices.

www.mapquest.com put in the city where you are and the city where you are going. It will tell you the distance and the quickest way to get there. you can print off the directions and there you go.
