Look at any totalitarian state at all. Nazi Germany. Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. The Cultural Revolution in China. The theme is always the same: think as we do, get brainwashed (tortured), or die. No, it doesn't work. Nice people eventually get sick of it and throw it out. Half the world ganged up to stop the Nazis. This fact is the only hope for human survival long term. Cooperation wins out over competition (though competition does have its value).

Look at the ancient ChavÃn culture of Peru. Their lives were controlled by religion. And they had no military. They lasted from around 900 to 200 BC. The main reason though was the priests would give the subjects hallucinogens to put them in a state of religious stupor. So in that case it worked, but not for long, and only because of the drugs. The only way I see a theocracy working for a long time would be if the worshipers did participate in some sort of drug use, or the government was able to control the people by use of a military. But that defeats the purpose. So basically it's a long shot.

a religious state is one where there is a state sanctioned religion, and that religion is a pre requisite for inclusion in the ruling class. After that its like any other government, as bad as the people who run it, if the church is a progressive possitive force (i know i know, its unlikely) then it will be as good or better than the alternatives, if not ... then not. religions like any ideology have their degrees, america is a pretty religious state for example.
nb - nazi germany, and any or all comunist states were explicitly not religious, just to correct the preconceptions of some people who posted before me.

Vatican City is a religious City State. Does that count? They seem to be doing OK… Iran is (as of now) a religious state…. But who knows how long that’ll last

Only if the citizens are in total and utter agreeance with it. I mean like 90% total compliance. Anything less than that, then there's bound to be some bloodshed.

that's already been done, with very bad results. No, it won't work...its very very bad.
The best system with current human dynamics is something like a meritocratic democracy.
