What say, that I was walking down the street and found myself in the crossfire of a gangland gun-fight.

Hell's Angels (or, Iraqi Shia militias, your pick) to the left of me and CRiPs (or, international, Saudi-financed, Sunni, non-conventional warfare soldiers, ala Al Queda) to the right of me. I notice another car coming toward me carrrying a number of Bloods who though not seeming to notice me, are now leaning out of their windows brandishing small calibre assault pistols (we can call these guys, the Kurds) which they are levelling at the the Angels and the CRiPs alike.

Do I stay the course to show these thugs that they wont intimidate me or prevent me from walking down a public, city street that my tax money goes to maintain? Or do I turn around, walk away and let them all work out their early childhood trauma until they are finished killing one another?

Wow, you live in a much scarier neighborhood than I do.
I think you might want to see what neighborhood organizations are doing to try to relieve the poverty and other circumstances that maybe the root cause.
I would not fight it out - they will win, as the insurgents are doing in Iraq. You will lose even if you bring 2.1 of your friends.

Yes, let their silly religious war continue and get our soldiers out of their idiotic civil war. Or just divide the country into 3 (which is what it originally was) and LEAVE. There's no need to be there in the first place...
