It depends on who you ask. Dolphins have been known to rescue people from sharks, etc. yes, but there are some other things to take into consideration...
There are two things that only three species do, the three species are humans, chimpanzees and dolphins. The two things are rape and murder. There is plenty of video footage of dolphins sexually attacking other dolphins, including juveniles. In the U.K. not to long back, porpoises were washing up dead on some beach, the only problem with them was severe blunt force trauma. Someone happened to film a short while after, a pod of atlantic bottlenose dolphins circling and killing porpoises by ramming into them.
I think they're a lot like us, some are good, and some are a**holes....

Generally nice. A lot are interested in people who are in the water but it doesn't mean that all in a pod will be. If mothers have babies they will be protective and they are bigger than you so if they get agressive they could be dangerous. Just watch what you are doing around them and be sensible. Actually I had an experience with one some time ago off the coast of Fla. He or it was very nice to me but I understand that in some situations they can be pretty nasty.

From all I've heard, dolphins are pretty nice. Seems like I even heard of them trying to save swimmers from shark attacks, even to the point of bumping the sharks. Not sure if that's true, though.

dolphins are very sweet. they help people and they let you swim with them. yeah they are nice. i love dolphins. (not eating!!)
