Because religion is an integral part of who some people are. They feel its part of their personal identity, and so if someone wants them to change some part of it, they take offense and stonewall the entire issue.

Because people are.. "taught" (inculcated) from their earliest ages (most impressionable at that time) - that there is some deity.. and etc.. etc.. So.. when they are older ~ "grown-up" (lol) they feel.. defensive when challenged.. and like a poker player with a nothing hand.. they try to bluff their way through life.. fooling..?? themselves..

Because its based on faith not facts. People need to defend it so emotionally because they can't prove it, they are trying to convey something they FEEL to be real.
