I just got a 94 Grand Prix SE and I've noticed that the two fans in the engine don't turn on. I don't know if they should come on automatically when needed. I know one of the fans should come on when I use the AC, but the other one doesn't seem to come on, no matter what the engine temp is. The weather has been cold and the engine hasn't been overheating, but I'm still concerned.

i own a repair shop, and only one of them comes on for normal use,the other one comes on and stays on when the air is on,but the one on the left side only comes on when engine temperature reaches above 190 degrees ,since its cold weather it probably wont come on for a while, good luck with it,i hope this help.s

Both of these fans are turned on automatically by the car's PCM. The primary fan will be enabled electrically when the motor's temp. reaches a certain predetermined temperature. The secondary fan will be enabled by the same PCM if the motor's temp. reaches an even higher predetermined temp. Also, the PCM will either turn the primary fan on when the AC is turned on or turn both of the fans on when AC sensors determine the "hot" side of the AC is getting too hot. The only way to be sure that they are both working is to let the motor sit and idle and see for yourself that at least one will turn on. If you are still concerned you can go into a shop with some electronic equipment for GM diagnosis and get them to override the sensors and turn the fans on for you which will confirm your fans operation. Good luck.

the other should come on only when its needed (i.e. when the thermostat opens), and on newer cars, this is alot higher of a temp than you would think. on my sisters camaro, the guage shows a little over 200F before the fan kicks on. so unless the car overheats, dont worry too much. if it hits over 205 or so and no fan, cool it down and start with the fan relay after you make sure all of the wires are properly attached, check to see if the fan works with 12v applied to it, then check your fan switch.
