Bet your parents paid a lot for your silver flute and you have probably left it at school many times perhaps even worried you left it outside on a bench. Seriously, the above ideas sound great even for a new flute. Only thing I can add is that you should clean it throughly more than once a year, to keep the tarnish away.

The best thing to do it to take q-tips, rub them in sterling silver polish and rub really hard around the areas where you are seeing corrosion. If this doesn't work, you can try to take a clean piece of muslin (you can buy it at any fabric store) and buff from side to side.

As for the joints, again use the silver polish but also use small amounts of grease to help it slide in and out. When I played, I didn't like the grease as it got on my hands and then on my clothes so I used a tiny bit of KY jelly on the sticky parts.

depending on what it's made out of...silver polish or rubbing alcohol. I clean the inside of mine with a clarinet swab, because it didn't come with a cleaning rod (also bought used) and I have those fuzzy insert thingies for my clarinet anyway.

Assuming its silver, polish it like you would any other piece of silver. IF its a silver flute, it may be corroded, but it shouldn't be rusted.

use silver polish or rubbing alcohol
for the joints you can use cork grease ( i know its for clarinets but it works just as well).
