I've called the cops about my next-door neighbor's excessively barking dog, and they told me to call animal control. the cop helping me gave me the wrong number for animal control, so i looked up the real one. animal control said they couldn't do anything. they said make the cops handle it.

did i just get a lazy cop to help me? if i call 911 again will they help me out?

how am i supposed to go about this entire dog barking thing?

If the dog is barking between normal day hours 7 am-10 pm, or whatever your town's noise ordinance is, then you have to deal with it. Anything after that, you could either call the cops and file a noise complaint or talk to your neighbor. I would at least try talking to your neighbor first and see if there is a fair compromise. Now then, if the dog is neglected, then you call animal control. Do not harm the dog, it did nothing to you and it does not know any better. Document any actions you make towards this problem so if it goes to court for any reason, you have facts for evidence. Good luck.

I know the obvious thing to do would be to talk to your neighbor, but that NEVER works. The neighbors on BOTH sides of me have whining, barking dogs. I called animal control and all they did was post warnings on the doors that my neighbors chose to ignore...just like they do the dogs...and ME.

I think you got a lazy cop. There are noise ordinances in all cities. Call the local police department directly (not 911, that is for emergencies) and tell them you want to file a noise/nuisance complaint. They have to address it.

you don't want to poison Fido. Your neighor could sue and it would go on your record. Continue to call the police (but use the non-emergency line unless the dog is actually attacking someone) as well as the local animal control. After 3 or 4 calls (and the 3 or 4 trips to your residence) they will have to talk to the dog owner. This is a nuissance and you have the right to complain about it.
