Because within itself the institution of slavery is malevolent. You are denying someone their basic right of freedom, individual rights as a human, and have reduced them to a sub-human category in order to justify their enslavement. Yeah, so I guess my answer is "no" also.

I think there were some who believed they were. As twisted as it sounds, there were people that owned slaves who felt 'bad' for them and didn't enjoy mistreating them because they thought of them as poor, stupid animals. If they didn't want to beat a dog, they didn't want to beat a slave. They obviously didn't respect them as human beings but they were taught to believe that slaves were not human in the sense that other people were. They can't always be blamed for their ignorance. Not every slaveholder was a cruel human being, they were just ignorant. There's also the part about how slaveholders actually believed that they had a 'right' to own these people because the law said they could and they had faith in the law. They thought they were allowed to force others to do whatever they wanted because they 'paid' for them. It's still racism but it's more the stupid kind rather than the hateful kind.

I'm talking about the American South before the Civil War since I don't know much about slaveholders in other cultures.

Yes as a matter of fact there were and in the days leading up to the American civil war most southern slave owners were. It was a small portion of these people who were cruel to their slaves. Most of the "benevolent slaveholders" saw the slaves yes as property, but property that could not be lived without and so it was seen to that slaves were provided for.

Most people don't like to be chained up and whipped so my answer is no.
