Run away as fast as you can from the 98-05 ML 320/350/430/500. It's a truck based Benz, and rides like one. And has arguably the WORST reliability and scores in JD Power surveys. Whoever wrote that this vehicle tanked MBZ quality is dead on right. Mercedes is only just now beginning to fight its way out of the trash heap caused by this abortion of a vehicle.

If you are looking for a better ride, look at the new ML350 or ML500 from 06 and newer.

The Mercedes-Benz first generation ML-Class, regardless of whether is it 320, 430, 500 or 55 AMG is all crap. It is the next worst quality Mercedes-Benz after the A-Class. Keep well off it. The new ML-Class IS the great Mercedes-Benz SUV to get. A ML350 should be enough. A ML320 CDI is also good.

The ML single handedly tanked Mercedes' quality ratings until they produced some other models with crappy reliability. Still, the ML makes up a bulk of their problems.

The 3.2L V6 engine isn't very good either.

ML is the only MB made in US. That's why is the biggest piece of crap. If you want to buy Mercedes go for GL class. Those are really great and classy cars and made in Germany with their workmanship quality.
If you don't have to buy ML, don't even think about it.

It uses a timing chain. No belt in that engine
