In early issues of the Elementals comic, the bad guys were shown doing horrible tortures to people in hopes that they might manifest super powers in the stress of the situation. The same thing has been used in fiction, to discover teleportation in The Stars My Destination.

I do not advocate this, the evil is evident. And, as Larry Niven has pointed out in his essay, The Theory and Practice of Teleportation, psychic teleportation either does not exist or it is notoriously unreliable. There have been too many people in deadly danger throughout history, and not enough of them have learned how to teleport away from it, under the stress of the moment, in time to save their lives. [That we have heard of.]

But—do you think it could work for other powers…? If there are people out there with undiscovered talents, mental or physical, what could bring them out?

More details coming, please wait for them!

In the comics, people who are not born with super powers (like Thor or Superman) or build them or train themselves to be super (like Batman or Iron Man) often get their powers by a ‘radiation accident’. [Also called the ‘Shazam hypothesis’ after the boy who supposedly developed super powers after being struck by lightning.]

Do you suppose it might actually be possible to develop an immunity to radiation or lightning after being exposed to it enough, in carefully-controlled, ever-increasing amounts? I think of the US park service ranger from West VA, who is in the Guinness book for having been struck by lightning seven times over a twenty year span of time (and bitten by rattlesnakes, twice!) Do you suppose he is more electricity-resistant than those who have not had their ‘metagene’ stimulated…?

Or, maybe he just didn’t get the RIGHT KIND of stimulation. How would we go about figuring out what was the right one for a given person?

Discuss, please!

I believe with strong focus and determination, some of these abilities, especially of the mind, could develop. However, faith has to have a part in the process. Today, with the help of movies, science, and other sources, people believe the impossible is just that. When in these situations, people may try to focus their abilities to save them, but doubts begin to fill their mind. "can I really do this" or "no way can I do that" and this moment of hesitation can be their downfall. I'm not saying everyone has an ability, like some children can have the same color as their parents or the color of their great grandmother, some people may just be born with it and not be aware of it.

There was a story of an elderly lady who lifted a car off her grandchild when it fall on top of him. Doctors stated this was due to the adrenaline being released into her body, but think about it, maybe the adrenaline was able to unlock that metagene for that moment. I don't think I could do that if I was in that same situation.

I believe there will be a time when there are those who will have mental abilities, but we will be long forgotten when that time comes.

Oddly enought there has been work done in that area. There are several studies in which people have been subjectecd to various intense stimulii and stresses. Most of this work is not sanctioned by the scientific community and none of it will be accepted even with the results, although those same results may instigate sanctioned research into that area.

Also, there are several other means and methods that I have seen, and seen results of that, do require some degree of study and training to develop, but the results are, impressive to say the least.

I would support them. I would not be bitter or envious of their new abilities. But I think I would feel hurt maybe sometimes that they are so busy and don't have time for little old me anymore. But I would try not to show how hurt I am because I know that they are doing the world a great favor by saving everyone. Oh and I would not be jealous of them getting more attention I don't like to be the center of attention to a large group of people my heart like stops beating.

Actually as stupid as it may sound yes. The movie doom had some truth to it. With an extra ( or one less i don't remember) chomozome the human body will be stronger and less likely to become ill. But super powers such as flying and x-ray vision is bull ****. Not gonna happen.
