The kidnapping of Persephone, Demeter's (mother-earth) daughter. After her daughter was kidnapped, Demeter cursed the land, and a great famine resulted. Hades agreed to let her return for 6 months out of every year to visit with her mother. Famine (autumn and winter) occurs every year when Persephone returns to Hades.
