It does sound like mold.

Most likely it is mold. Mold can be cleaned from most things. Porous material such as wood, drywall and clothing that have been damaged by wood should not be cleaned, rather, destroyed. If your partner has health issues, I would suggest getting rid of the mattress asap, as the mattress can harbor the mold spores.. The mold will most likely exacerbate the asthma problems. I would also recommend repairing the leak asap, as the mold issue will not go away until the moisture problem is taken care of. Feel free to email me with any other questions you may have. Good luck.

The mold may be growing inside the mattress as well as on the surface, so call a professional carpet/ house cleaner. First find the water leak and get that fixed. You may need to replace the drywall and insulation as well.

will be fine if you can steam clean it (and kill mold spores) - but you need to ensure the damp is fixed at source.
